welcome to this 2022nd year of pope gregory xiii (or something)!
every year since 2016, i have been doing some version of a personal reflection retreat. it’s a foundational element of my personal system. taking this time every year to look back (with rigor) at what happened in the past year and using that as fodder to think ahead about the upcoming one has been transformative in more ways than i can list.
i write to you now because a few folks have asked for this list already this year and a text a few minutes ago from andy cook pushed me over the edge to share this more broadly.
so here you are:
the archive of all the blog posts i’ve written over the years regarding my annual reflection retreats. some of these are process write ups; others are summaries of what i saw/learned during one of the retreats
enjoy and, because i wouldn’t dare send a newsletter out without a quote, here’s a thought as we start out:
"Do you change people first or do you change society? I believe this is a false dichotomy. You have to change both simultaneously. If you're changing only yourself and have no concern for changing the society, something goes awry. If you're changing only society but not changing yourself, something goes awry.
Now, 'simultaneously' may be an overstatement, because I think there are periods when one has to concentrate on one or the other. And there are periods in a society, in a culture, when the emphasis is appropriate only on one or the other. What I'm trying to say is, never lose sight of either the internal world or the external world, the peace within and the peace based on justice outside." — David Dellinger
ps - if you’re interested in sending along some $$ for the gift of these resources, feel free to venmo (@Lawrence-BarrinerII), cashapp ($lqb2), or paypal me. idk what i’ll do with the funds but i’ll split anything received between the north american indian center of boston and printing out the first set of uncle postcards! (more on that soon… >_>)
